Mike @ Hodgdon turned me on to this powder. In 2013, with only 8 days to go before season, I began to work on a load. It seemed totally insane, why change a proven load that works great?, but something inside said "Do it!" I began at 85gr and jumped in half grain increments to 87 grains. I put up five targets and used my old faithful control load of 82.5gr IMR 7828. In round robin fashion, shot 1, loading 1, target 1, then on to shot 2, loading 2, target 2 I went. It took about a hour and a half for me to shoot all 30 rounds, waiting at least 2-3 minutes between shots. In the end the 5 shot grouping of 87gr H1000 load was 20% smaller than my IMR7828 load. I went with it and have been extremely happy ever since. This load has always been behind a 200 grain Nosler Accubond, fired by Federal 215M primers. The rifle, just a Wal-mart Weatherby Vanguard w a 24" bbl was given me as a birthday gift by my old friend Matt Anderson. It has Waylon Jennings symbol painted on both sides and has been "waylon" on big game animals for 19 years. Unsure of the velocity, but have triangulated using two known points of impact to about 2950-2980fps. Accuracy with my astigmatism and a Rifle Basix trigger hovers around 1-1.25 inches for a 5 shot group. This is easily good enough for 1-500 yard shots on elk sized critters. Cows go straight down. Bulls take 1-3 steps, then fall straight down. Thank you, Mike, and thank you Hodgdon for making such a great powder!! Locke Mellott
