    296 powder

Posted by Steve on Nov 9th 2023

I've been using this powder for decades. I'm 76 years young and have used 296 in all my 44 magnum rifles and pistols for magnum full power loads. Works best when you fill the powder to the base of the bullet. Not a powder for light loads in 44 magnum. I started using 296 in the 300 BLK rifle for 125 and 130 gr. bullets with great success. Very accurate and same as 44 magnum, best to fill case to the bottom of the bullet. Do not try to compress this powder in 300 BLK. Use another powder if you think you need more velocity but that is a useless endeavor IMO with the 300 BLK.

I have been using this to reload 300 Blackout and have had very positive, very consistent results. I have no intention of changing!

I love the performance of the powder but I don’t like some of the characteristics loading with the powder.

The powder migration seems to be more of a problem with Spolar loaders than other brands.

    Winchester 296

This stuff is awesome in my 460 S&W Mag, 454 Casull and 44 Mag. It's very powerful, reliable if a mag primer and heavy crimp is used, and super clean.

    W296

After completing the tests to make sure my powder is safe I went to the range. My 46 year old powder fired just as smooth, clean, with zero unburned powder as it did when it was new. My Dan Wesson 357 vent, 6' barrel loves this powder.

    .41 Magnum, 265 gr WFNGC

Posted by Blair Hansen on Apr 10th 2022

This is a terrific load in the .41 Magnum. I load 20.3/Federal magnum primer, new Starline brass. However, in Model 57 Smith and Wesson revolvers, I get an average of 1150 fps. Somewhat understandable, as I presume the factory velocity is measured from non-vented barrels.

Works good for 357 mag, achieves expected 1200+ fps. Feeds well in my Hornady progressive press.
